I’ve spent quite a bit of time trying to find out where most quinoa in American supermarkets was coming from. In most cases, despite, repeated inquiries, the sourcing is vague because no one wants to admit their methods are actually hurting Andean farmers. That’s how I discovered Sarela Herrada, the co-founder of the food company SIMPLi. Born in Peru, but based in Washington DC, Herrada is helping re-shape the fair trade of products like quinoa, olive oil, and açaí in a way that’s better for farmers, the environment, and consumers. – Nicholas Gill
