The Cuba Libre cocktail was born at the close of the Cuban War of Independence against Spain. Once the war was won, Cuban and Americans soldiers purportedly mixed cocktails of rum, Coca-Cola and lime, joyously toasting “por Cuba Libre!” or “for a free Cuba.” The drink was forever immortalized. — Editor’s Note
