Hotel Openings: Summer 2018 : New Worlder

Our Hotel Openings series is a quarterly round-up of new and noteworthy debuts that are on our radar in the Americas, as well as some properties that we’ll be keeping our eye on in the coming months.

InterContinental San Diego — San Diego, California

InterContinental San Diego is the newest addition to the San Diego lodging scene. Located in downtown San Diego, looking out to the San Diego Bay, the 400-room urban retreat is outfitted with five dining spots, including Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse, a signature lobby-level restaurant with an open kitchen, 19th floor rooftop bar, pool bar, and café.  With 95,000 square feet of meeting space, and floor-to-ceiling windows that shower guests with bright California sun, as well as bay and city views. InterContinental will begin to welcome guest on August 28th.

Viceroy Los Cabos — Los Cabos, Mexico

Formerly known as Mar Adentro, the Viceroy Los Cabos is situated right in the heart of San José del Cabo on the coast of Baja California, Mexico. Facing the Sea of Cortes, the 194-room beachfront property includes a cinema, meeting spaces and restaurant and bars. The dining spaces capture the history and culture of Baja in both atmosphere and culinary flair.  New menu offerings drawing inspiration from authentic Mexican, Peruvian and Spanish cuisine. In addition to a beach pool and bar, the expanded luxury spa and modernized fitness center was created by celebrity trainer, Harley Pasternak. Viceroy Los Cabos is the 15th property to debut under Los Angeles based Viceroy Hotel group, and the second in Mexico, joining the Viceroy Riviera Maya.

andBeyond Vira Vira — Lake District, Chile

Luxury experiential company andBeyond will debut its first lodge outside of Africa in South America, set to open in September 2018. Embracing an ethos that centers on ethical and environmental awareness, andBeyond Vira Vira is located in Chile’s Lake District and offers a plethora of outdoor activities for adventure lovers, from horseback-riding to fly fishing to skiing and snowboarding, as well as an adventure program for kids named the Wildchild. With 23 rooms (12 villas, 6 suites and a 5-room hacienda), the lodge’s amenities will feature a restaurant with a farm-to-table concept and outdoor dining which allows guest to enjoy the shores of Luicura River and its natural surroundings.

The Groton Inn – Groton, Massachusetts

Located on the charming Main Street of Groton, just 35 miles from Boston, this 60-room inn is America’s oldest, with the original structure (circa 1678) destroyed by fire in 2011. Now, meticulously and thoughtfully re-imagined, drawing inspiration from classic New England architecture and the area’s rich colonial history, the restored inn offers spacious guest rooms with comfortable work areas and luxurious amenities. Guests enjoy a full buffet breakfast, complimentary WIFI, a state-of-the-art fitness center, and a beautifully landscaped courtyard with fireplace. Forge & Vine, a 156-seat freestanding restaurant set on 8.5 acres shared with The Groton Inn opens August 2018.

Isla Palenque Island Resort — Gulf of Chiriquí, Panama

Isla Palenque Island Resort is the newest property in the Gulf of Chiriquí, Panama. Opened in June, this private, 400-acre island resort is for nature-lovers looking for a raw place to relax and soak in the surroundings. Already housing a six-room villa, the property has added eight new beach suites from which guests can base themselves as they enjoy islands trails and water activities like kayaking or paddle boarding. Isla Palenque provides casual beachfront dinning committed to exclusively serve fresh and organic ingredients, locally sourced.

Nikki Beach Barbados — Port Ferdinand, Barbados

Nikki Beach Worldwide has opened its newest location in Port Ferdinand, Barbados. Situated on 1.4 acres of beachfront and offering views of the Atlantic Ocean, the resort features all white design with wood accents and stone elements sourced from the region. The pool features an octagon wet bar, oversized luxury pool beds, and VIP cabanas where resident DJs and musicians play signature Nikki Beach beats while the restaurant is dedicated to using seasonal, local ingredients and daily catch from community fishermen whenever possible.

Solaz — Los Cabos, Mexico

The Luxury Collection Hotels & Resorts will open its first hotel in Baja California Sur – and seventh hotel in Mexico — with Solaz in September 2018. Featuring 128-rooms and 21 residences, the property is nestled on 34 acres overlooking the Sea of Cortez. With guest rooms boasting private patios, custom furnishings and original art, floor plans blur the lines between indoor and outdoor space. Six unique restaurants and lounges round out the experience, including freshly caught fish and seafood at Al Pairo; traditional and contemporary Baja fare and tapas at Cascabel; and a “Dinner Grill” featuring dry-aged steaks, local live lobsters, and the sea’s freshest fish at Mako. 50-meter infinity pools lining 1,246 linear feet of white sand beaches overlooking the coastline and a gym, spa and kids club enhance amenities offerings.

Casa Anna Garzon — Maldonado, Uruguay

Styled in the Garzon architecture of the 1920’s which features low-built houses, Casa Anna is situated in Uruguay’s small town of Garzon, just two hours from Montevideo. With six completely rebuilt casitas, these double-room suites boast one of the most treasured hotel perks in South America: having all meals prepared by the team of chef Francis Mallmann, utilizing staff and ingredients from his nearby hotel and restaurant. Beautiful gardens surround a swimming pool and palapa-style pool house, as well as a Ping-Pong court. For those looking to unwind, yoga and massage are also available.


Scheduled to open in March of 2019, the Ritz-Carlton family heads to Los Cabos, Mexico for its newest Ritz-Carlton Reserve propertyZadún. Located along the Sea of Cortéz, the resort will offer over 100 villas, two championship golf courses, and a desert botanical park and mark the second Ritz Carlton Reserve property in the Caribbean and Mexico region, the other being in Puerto Rico.

Marriott will bring its first branded property to Belize with an oceanfront resort, The Belize Marriott Ambergris Caye Resort and Residences. Combining old-world allure with a full range of modern amenities, the 203 room-property will be attached to 70 branded residences, as well as restaurants, a rooftop lounge, spa, fitness center, conference and event space, dive shop, and a variety of retail outlets. The location provides convenient access to Belize’s Barrier Reef, the largest reef system in the northern hemisphere. The property is slated to open in 2020.

After five months of intensive restoration and renovation, the Infante Sagres, which was Portugal’s first ever five-star hotel, has reopened with 75 rooms, 10 suites and a new Vogue Café. During the refurbishment, specialist teams of restorers were brought in to work on the iconic original features such as the 5-story stained glass window and the impressive chandeliers in the dining room.

Sugar Beach announced their latest collection of luxury residences – the Piton Residences – is set to be finished by the end of 2020. Nestled between the Pitons, a UNESCO World Heritage-site, the four or five bedroom homes’ harmonious design is highlighted with pitched roofs, natural timber exteriors and reflection pools on three sides.

Situated in six 18th century mansions in San Miguel de Allende, Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada is entirely refurbished. Every casona has been redesign with curated artisan décor items, the hotel also introduced a new Restaurante del Parque accompanied with its own mini-gallery and workshop suitably dubbed The Artist Corner.

Down in Baja California Sur, The Cape, a Thompson hotel located on a secluded Cabos San Lucas beach celebrates its third-anniversary with the opening of its new on-site mezcaleria and poolside raw bar. The former will be housed in the “Glass Box”– featuring sweeping, 360-degree views of the beach below. Daniel Quizada, the resident mezcal curator, has redesigned the menu to specialize in guided tastings of artisanal and “limited-production” mezcals.

Dream Hotel Group will open a new property in San Miguel de Allende under their luxury brand The Chatwal. Resting on a cliff overlooking the Laja River Valley, The Chatwal San Miguel will feature 44 villas and 124 residences, conveniently located near World Heritage site Atotonilco Sanctuary which sits between Montecillo de la Milpa and Los Ricos de Abajo. Situated on 200 acres of vineyards, guests will enjoy farm-to-table dining, elaborate wines, first-class polo club, spa and fitness center. The resort is anticipated to open in 2020.

Dorado Beach, a Ritz Carlton Reserve becomes the first ultra-luxury resort to reopen its doors in Puerto Rico post-Hurricane Maria. Nestled away on Puerto Rico’s Caribbean coast, the resort rests on 1,400 acres of the former Rockefeller estate, and is slated to re-open October 2018. 

Los Angeles-based real estate firm, Irongate, is thrilled to announce the newest addition to the Costa Palmas development: Amanvari. Aman’s first Mexico property will be nestled between Sierra de la Laguna mountains and the Sea of Cortes on East Cape of Baja in 2020.
