Hotel Openings: Summer 2017 : New Worlder

Our Hotel Openings series is a quarterly round-up of new and noteworthy debuts that are on our radar in the Americas, as well as some properties that we’ll be keeping our eye on in the coming months.

Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay — Ibiza, Spain 

Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay, a new five-star resort and member of the globally recognized Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH), recently opened its doors to guests. This is SLH’s first property in Spain’s popular island of Ibiza. The space holds 152 designer rooms and suites, a Six Senses spa —inspired by the healing benefits of the surrounding environment of the island— and four restaurants and bars. The spot rests close to the beaches of Talamanca Bay, two kilometers north of the town of Ibiza (a UNESCO World Heritage site) and an easy fifteen minutes’ walk from trendy boutiques and clubs of Marina Botafoch.

Grand Hyatt Baha Mar — The Bahamas

Just opened in April, the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar resort rests on Nassau’s Northern Shore and houses a massive 1,800 guest rooms. Complete with island-inspired decor, all rooms and suites come equipped with ocean views. The resort also holds seven multi-level pools with swim-up bars and aquariums, a flamingo sanctuary, the Caribbean’s largest casino, and a Jack Nicklaus Signature Design golf course. Food and beverage options include standalone daiquiri and conch shacks, craft cocktail bars, and upscale Mediterranean and pan-Asian cuisine.

LUMA Hotel — New York City, USA

Located in the heart of New York City, LUMA sits on 41st Street between Broadway and the Avenue of the Americas. The property holds 28 floors and 130 rooms and includes floor-to-ceiling windows that offer impressive views of the surrounding cityscape. A highlight feature is the hotel’s signature restaurant, Ortiz, which is helmed by James Beard Award-winning Iron Chef, Chef Jose Garces. A Basque-inspired tapas bar, Ortiz is the chef’s first culinary venture in New York.

Belmond Las Casitas — Colca Canyon, Peru

Located in the Arequipa region of Southern Peru, Belmond Las Casitas is a 20-room property from the revamped Orient Express brand. The space is set against the Andes and each each individual casita features a private terrace with a heated plunge pool and sweeping views across the Colca Canyon, a popular tourist attraction in the area.

Belmond Andean Explorer — Peru 

After much anticipation, South America’s first luxury sleeper train recently started carrying passengers across Peru. The elegant train takes guests across stunning scenery, showcasing the Andes and the country’s many lakes. Leading the train’s cooking is Peruvian chef Diego Muñoz, who showcases the diversity of the country’s ingredients. For interested travelers, the chef offers a ceviche class. Included in the train is an observation car with an outdoor terrace, a spot that converts into the gathering hole for guests by night to dance and listen to live music.

The Alvear Icon — Buenos Aires, Argentina 

Located in the trendy Putero Madero neighborhood, the Alvear Icon is a luxurious addition to the Argentine capital. Housing 159 rooms across the 34-story building, all rooms come equipped with Hermès signé amenities. The top floor is home both a rooftop bar and restaurant where guests can enjoy panoramic views of the city. A highlight feature of the property, the hotel is also home to South America’s first glatt kosher deluxe restaurant  that is slated to open in September 2017.

PUBLIC — New York City, USA

Recently opened in New York City’s Lower East Side, PUBLIC is the latest project from Ian Schrager. The $150 per night entry price point on rooms is a property highlight, offering smart design at an accessible and affordable price. Pritzker Prize award-winning architects Herzog & de Meuron are the team behind the property’s modern and forward-thinking design. Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten helms both the hotel’s restaurant and grab-and-go marketplace for light snacks. Just in time for summer, the hotel’s outdoor garden space will surely be ut to good use as well.

Blackstone Hotel — Chicago, USA 

After a lengthy $139 million renovation, the landmark Blackstone Hotel in Chicago joins the Autograph Collection Hotels, part of Marriott International. Nicknamed the “Hotel of Presidents” for many years, the property is both famous and notorious for hosting U.S. presidents and foreign dignitaries, scandalous political and mob exchanges, a star-studded array of actors, and many movie productions. Offering over 300 guest rooms and suites, the Blackstone Hotel rests on the city’s Cultural Mile along Michigan Avenue The property’s restaurant Mercat a la Planxa takes inspiration from Catalonia, melding age-old flavors from Spain with modern twists alongside Cava, sangria, and wine.

Pod Hotel — Washington D.C, USA

Pod Hotels has added a property in Washington D.C., the brand’s first outside of its home base of New York City. The new Pod Hotel location in D.C. lies in the trendy Penn Quarter & Chinatown neighborhood in the heart of our nation’s capital. Taking inspiration from other Pod Hotels, the D.C. property will also emphasize local food and beverage venues and artistic experiences. Venue highlights include the Crimson Whiskey Bar — a space featuring whiskeys from the Deep South — and Crimson View – the hotel’s rooftop featuring indoor and outdoor spaces that boast stunning views of the D.C. skyline.

Mulato Hotel — Mesitas, Colombia 

This new, boutique property comes from one of Colombia’s most exciting young chefs, Jennifer Rodriguez, who also owns the attached restaurant Mestizo: Cocina de Origen. Set in the town of Mesitas situated two hours outside of Bogota, the hotel is in a colonial building with hand painted tiles and handcrafted furnishings across its rooms. With the pairing of Mestizo and Mulato, the town of Mesita is sure to quickly become Bogotá’s most popular overnight culinary destination. Facebook Page

Hotel 50 Bowery — New York City, USA

Hotel 50 Bowery is the first Joie de Vivre property in New York and is located in Chinatown. Offering guests 229 rooms across 21 floors, this boutique hotel takes inspiration from the surrounding community and culture. The project is a collaboration by Alex Chu of Chu Enterprises LLC., and is owned by two families – one being longtime Chinatown natives, and the other with an international hospitality presence. Artwork from local artists Lowell Boyers, Simone Shubuck, and André Saraiva can be found throughout the hotel.

News & Updates:

Recently opened in spring, The Sagamore Pendry Baltimore Hotel is home to the Rec Pier Chop House, an Italian Chop House that overlooks the busy Thames Street. The restaurant is the work of NoHo Hospitality Group’s chef Andrew Carmellini and partners Josh Pickard and Luke Ostrom (Locanda Verde, The Dutch, Little Park). Dishing up chef Carmellini’s popular, classic Italian fare, the food is certainly a winning feature of this new spot.

The Westin Los Cabos Resort Villas & Spa recently completed and extensive renovation, adding studios and two-bedroom villas to the resort along the Pacific. Guests can enjoy remodeled villas with modern kitchens, balconies, and washers and dryers.

The luxury hotel group Dream Hotel Group recently announced it will open its first properties in the Caribbean by 2019. The resorts—Time Dominican Republic and Unscripted Dominican Republic—are part of Dream’s global expansion, a plan that involves 150 new properties across the world by 2022.

Club Brava, in El San Juan Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico, recently completed a major series of renovations to the iconic club along with the hotel. The redesign is both modern and elegant, reflecting the history of the space and desired ambiance for hotel and club goers.

Omni Hotels & Resorts has partnered with the brand Avocados from Mexico to create its “Art of Water” poolside menu, featuring both a popular and healthful ingredient. Given the avocado’s current popularity, Omni will utilize avocados from Michoacán, Mexico in seasonal plates across its various properties for the remainder of summer.

Set to open early September, the new Ace Hotel in Chicago will begin accepting reservations in July. Preview rooms are also available at 25% off for reservations booked for July through the end of August. Located in the city’s cultural Western Loop, the Ace rests off the Morgan-Lake L station and is close to some of the city’s best dining.

After much success with its popular Chicago property, Virgin Hotels will open a new hotel in San Francisco sometime soon this summer. The property will be located in San Francisco’s South of Market, offer 196 suites and master suites, and house its Commons Club — an open-to-all lounge.

Another property in San Francisco, the Proper Hotel will open its doors to guests any day now and is now accepting reservations. The spot rests in an old flatiron building on the corner of 7th and Market and symbolizes restoration and revitalization efforts in the city’s South of Market neighborhood.

Small Luxury Hotels (SLH), a consortium of small, luxury properties across the world, added some new spots to its impressive portfolio, including both Casa Velas in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and São Lourenço do Barrocal in Monsaraz, Portugal. Located just minutes from the beach, Casa Velas offers 80 boutique suites and an 18-hole golf course. São Lourenço do Barrocal is a fully-working farm that holds 40 rooms, suites, and cottages that tastefully mix country and luxury.

Scheduled to open in August, the Amérian Executive Congreso Hotel is a new four-star hotel in the Balvanera neighborhood of Buenos Aires. Across its 26 floors, all rooms will come with balconies that overlook the city or the hotel’s park area. Highlight amenities include an outdoor semi-Olympic pool with solarium and open-air green spaces, a heated indoor pool with a Jacuzzi, a gym, and a spa.
